Mosquito species use distinct skin signals to select human hosts
A study conducted by researchers at Florida International University has revealed that different mosquito species target human hosts based on specific chemical and microbial signals. By analyzing 119 participants, researchers examined the attraction levels of three disease-carrying species: Aedes aegypti (yellow fever mosquito), Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito), and Culex quinquefasciatus (southern house mosquito).
The findings, published in the journal Science, indicate that no single individual was a preferred target for all three species simultaneously. Instead, each species relies on a unique combination of skin odors and microbial signatures to identify hosts. For instance, Aedes aegypti showed a high attraction rate of 89 percent to specific scent sources, while Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes albopictus showed lower rates of 43 percent and 27 percent, respectively.
Researchers identified that while certain skin bacteria were common among highly attractive individuals across all species, the specific chemical compounds preferred by each mosquito type varied significantly. The study suggests that being a frequent target for one type of mosquito does not necessarily make an individual more attractive to others.
