Mosquitoes Reveal Dual Role as Pollinators and Human-Seeking Pests

Researchers in the United States are uncovering new aspects of mosquito ecology. Studies of Colorado orchids and laboratory work by scientists such as David Inouye, Lawrence Reeves, and Chloé Lahondère show that dozens of mosquito species visit flowers, transport pollen, and can effectively pollinate orchids, indicating a modest but real contribution to plant reproduction.

At the same time, a three‑year investigation at Georgia Tech tracked the flight paths of hundreds of mosquitoes around a human subject to decode how these insects locate and bite people. The work confirmed that mosquitoes rely on heat, carbon‑dioxide, humidity and odor cues to pinpoint hosts, and highlighted the challenges of controlling a vector responsible for over 700,000 deaths annually and billions of euros in global control costs.
