Mosquitoes show viral transmission mechanisms and insecticide resistance
New scientific research has identified mechanisms that could improve the fight against mosquito-borne viruses such as Zika, dengue, and West Nile. A study conducted by researchers from the IRD, CNRS, the University of Montpellier, and Mahidol University found that mosquito saliva contains a viral RNA component called sfRNA. This compound appears to facilitate infection by inhibiting the host's initial immune response, potentially offering a new target for vaccine development.
Simultaneously, concerns are rising regarding the adaptability of mosquito populations. A study from the University of Delhi on Aedes aegypti mosquitoes has provided early evidence of developing resistance to alpha-cypermethrin, a widely used insecticide. While the insecticide maintained a mortality rate of approximately 97.91%, researchers observed that certain individuals survived due to the rapid activation of detoxification enzymes, such as beta-esterase. These findings highlight the dual challenge of understanding viral transmission mechanisms and managing increasing insect resistance to chemical controls.
