Mosquitoes Target People with Blood Type O and Specific Body Odors, Research Shows

Scientists explain why some individuals receive more mosquito bites. Female mosquitoes locate hosts by sensing carbon‑dioxide, body heat, humidity and a complex blend of skin‑derived chemicals. Recent studies identified up to 27 skin compounds that attract Aedes aegypti, with 1‑octen‑3‑ol standing out, and noted that higher CO₂ output from heavy breathing or warm skin also draws insects.

Laboratory tests have found a modest preference for people with blood type O, though experts stress that odor, skin microbiota, temperature, and alcohol consumption play larger roles. Drinking alcohol raises body temperature and CO₂ emission, further increasing bite likelihood. Climate change is expanding the range of disease‑carrying species such as Aedes albopictus, raising future health concerns.
