Mosquito host preference linked to blood type and skin bacteria

Scientific research has provided new insights into why mosquitoes target specific individuals. A study published in the Journal of Medical Entomology by researchers in Chiba, Japan, found that Asian tiger mosquitoes show a preference for individuals with Type 0 blood. In tests involving 64 people, the landing rate for Type 0 individuals was 83.3 percent, compared to 46.5 percent for those with Type A blood.

Complementary research from Florida International University, published in iScience, suggests that skin bacteria play a more critical role than blood type in host selection. By studying 119 volunteers, researchers identified 246 different types of bacteria on human skin, creating a unique “bacterial fingerprint” for each person. The study found that different mosquito species, such as the yellow fever mosquito and the southern mosquito, target different microbial scent signatures.

While blood type may influence certain species like the Asian tiger mosquito, scientists emphasize that mosquitoes primarily locate hosts using carbon dioxide from breath, body temperature, and moisture. The unique combination of these factors and skin microbes determines an individual's attractiveness to various mosquito species.
