Mossos d'Esquadra detect rising animal trafficking via AP-7

The Mossos d'Esquadra have detected an increase in animal trafficking, specifically dogs, along the AP-7 highway. The Regional Environmental Unit (URMA) in Girona is targeting criminal organizations that transport highly sought-after breeds, such as Chihuahuas, Teckels, Labradors, and Golden Retrievers, from Eastern Europe to Spain.

This illegal trade is highly lucrative; Toni Martín, head of the URMA in Girona, noted that traffickers may purchase an animal for 100 euros and resell it to an intermediary for 500 euros, who then sells it to a private individual for up to 2,000 euros. This can multiply profits by ten to twenty times.

Authorities expressed significant concern regarding the lack of sanitary controls. Many animals arrive without proper health checks, leading to animal mortality and the risk of diseases being transmitted to unsuspecting buyers. Police emphasize that their monitoring efforts include both illegal traffickers and legitimate transporters to ensure all international documentation is in order.
