Mostar Council Moves to Close Uborku Landfill Amid Legal Delays

The City Council of Mostar held an extraordinary session to address the situation at the public waste depot “Uborku”. Mayor Mario Kordić highlighted extensive damage after a fire that reignited twice, and noted that years of legal obstacles have stalled the opening of a new landfill field at Uborku, which he sees as the first step toward closing all existing sites.

Kordić cited a 2023 decision by the BiH Supreme Court confirming the validity of the adaptation plan, and said that urban‑planning and construction permits for all four phases of the Uborku clean‑up were finally obtained. Despite receiving a permit to start remediation two weeks ago, the site was set on fire again. The council plans to hire a company to shred, bal‑wrap and safely store the mixed municipal waste, which currently amounts to about 120 tonnes per day. The next location for a new landfill will be determined by cantonal or federal authorities under a forthcoming waste‑management plan. Council President Đani Rahimić raised concerns about the clarity of the adaptation plan and urged realistic, long‑term solutions.
