Mostar hospital treats 12 patients for venomous snake bites

The University Clinical Hospital (SKB) Mostar has treated 12 patients for venomous snake bites since the beginning of the season. Of these cases, eight required hospital stays due to the effects of the venom.

Dr. Svjetlana Grgić, an infectious disease specialist at SKB Mostar, stated that while all hospitalized patients were medically endangered, they have all recovered and been discharged without complications. The hospital confirmed it has sufficient supplies of antivenom serum to treat future cases.

Medical officials noted that the current number of incidents is consistent with the annual average of seven to ten bites recorded over the last decade. Most bites occur among local residents performing agricultural work during the morning or evening hours. The most dangerous species in the Herzegovina region is the nose-horned viper (Vipera ammodytes).

Doctors advise that if bitten, the individual should remain calm and avoid unnecessary movement. The bitten limb should be kept below heart level, and restrictive items such as rings, watches, or bracelets should be removed immediately to prevent circulation issues caused by swelling. Medical experts warn against attempting to suck out the venom or applying ice, as these methods can worsen the condition.
