Mostviertel expects exceptional pear harvest
The Mostviertel region in Austria is expecting one of its best pear harvests in over a decade. Despite recent heat and drought, the Chamber of Agriculture Lower Austria reports that the harvest for cider and juice production is expected to be exceptionally positive.
Experts attribute the high quality to several factors: abundant spring blossoms, a warm summer, and timely rainfall. The heat has resulted in higher sugar concentrations due to reduced juice volume within the fruit, while optimal acidity levels and cool night temperatures have contributed to full aroma development. Additionally, the lack of moisture has prevented most fungal diseases, leaving the fruit skins largely spotless. The extensive root systems of traditional orchard trees (Streuobst) are credited with helping the trees withstand the dry conditions better than intensive cultivation methods.
