Motagua defeats Marathón 2-0 in Honduran national classic

Motagua secured a 2-0 victory against Marathón in the 12th round of the 2026 Apertura tournament of the Honduran National League. Captain Denis Meléndez was the standout performer, scoring both goals for the blue side.

Meléndez opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a powerful right-footed shot from the edge of the area. He doubled the lead in the 39th minute with a low shot from outside the box, which was confirmed by the referee following a VAR review for a potential offside.

In the second half, Marathón attempted to respond through aerial plays involving Alberth Elis and Nayrobi Vargas. However, Motagua goalkeeper Luis Ortiz made key interventions, including a crucial save in the 75th minute against a shot from Jonathan Bueso, to maintain the clean sheet.

With this win, Motagua reaches 25 points, moving up to third place in the standings. Marathón remains in fourth place with 22 points. The victory also ends Motagua's winless streak in regulation time against Marathón dating back to February 2024.
