Mother tattoos communication keyboard to assist non-verbal son

Jessica Fletcher, a mother from Canada, has tattooed a communication keyboard onto her forearm to assist her 11-year-old son, Hunter, who is autistic and non-verbal.

Hunter typically relies on an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device, such as a tablet, to express himself. The idea for the tattoo originated after a restaurant visit where Hunter's electronic device ran out of battery. During the incident, Hunter used a napkin to draw a makeshift keyboard to communicate his needs.

The tattoo includes letters, symbols for emotions like happy and sad faces, and a specific key that reads “I love you.” While it does not replace his electronic device, the tattoo serves as a permanent, low-tech backup for situations where technology is unavailable, such as during travel, in aquatic environments like pools, or when devices are uncharged. It also allows for more discreet, silent communication.
