Mother urges motorcycle helmet use after son's fatal accident
The mother of a 22-year-old man named Lefteris is issuing a plea for motorcycle riders to wear helmets following her son's fatal accident in September 2022. Lefteris, who had traveled from Crete to celebrate his mother's birthday, died after a motorcycle accident where he was not wearing a helmet.
According to witnesses, the accident occurred at low speeds of approximately 20 to 30 kilometers per hour when the motorcycle slipped on a square, causing him to be thrown into the air and strike his head against stones and a curb. His mother described a harrowing period of medical struggle, including 70 days in intensive care and multiple surgeries to address severe head injuries. She noted that he chose not to wear a helmet that night to avoid messing up his hair, emphasizing that 'hair can be fixed, but the head cannot.'
