Motherboard prices expected to rise due to component costs
Motherboard production costs are rising significantly, signaling potential retail price increases for consumers in the coming months. While average retail prices only rose by approximately 3% in August, manufacturers have largely absorbed the impact of rising component costs thus far. However, as older stock depletes, a new wave of price hikes is expected to reflect the actual increase in manufacturing expenses, which has grown by at least 10%.
The price surge is driven by several critical components:
• Printed Circuit Boards (PCB): Costs for fiberglass and copper-based boards have increased between 15% and 50%. • Capacitors: These essential components for power delivery (VRM) have seen a massive price spike of nearly 50%. • Wi-Fi Modules: Connectivity chips have increased in cost by 10% to 20%.
This trend complicates the market for PC builders, especially as these increases follow recent price hikes in graphics cards and RAM modules. Even older platforms, such as DDR4-based motherboards, are being affected by the rising cost of raw materials, making it more difficult for manufacturers to offer budget-friendly alternatives.
