Mothers of Kherson opera premieres in Warsaw

The world premiere of the opera ‘Mothers of Kherson’ took place at the Teatr Wielki - Opera Narodowa in Warsaw. The production addresses the forced displacement and abduction of Ukrainian children by Russian forces during the ongoing invasion.

Composed by Ukrainian composer Maxim Kolomiiets with a libretto by American playwright George Brant, the story is inspired by real accounts of Ukrainian mothers and grandmothers attempting to recover their children from occupied territories. The narrative follows characters Kateryna, Dasza, and Olha as they navigate a journey to find children who were moved to camps in Crimea or deeper into Russia.

The production marks a significant collaboration between the Polish National Opera and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, facilitated by Keri-Lynn Wilson. Following its Warsaw debut, the work is scheduled for a performance at the Metropolitan Opera.
