Motion sickness causes and prevention strategies

Motion sickness, also known as kinetosis, is a physiological response caused by a conflict between sensory inputs. Experts explain that the condition occurs when the brain receives contradictory information from the eyes, the inner ear's vestibular system, and muscular receptors. For instance, reading a book in a moving vehicle causes the eyes to perceive stillness while the inner ear detects acceleration and turns.

Common symptoms include nausea, sweating, dizziness, cold sweats, pallor, and in severe cases, vomiting. To prevent these symptoms, specialists recommend looking toward the horizon, avoiding reading during travel, ensuring adequate rest, and choosing seats that experience less movement.

While motion sickness is typically temporary, persistent symptoms occurring outside of travel should be evaluated by a professional to rule out other balance-related issues.
