MotoGP 850cc testing shows performance parity at Red Bull Ring

MotoGP testing of the new 850cc motorcycles at the Red Bull Ring has demonstrated that the reduction in engine displacement has not negatively impacted performance. Data from the sessions suggests that new Pirelli tire compounds are effectively compensating for the lower power output, maintaining competitiveness levels comparable to the current 1000cc machines.

Portuguese rider Diogo Moreira recorded the fastest time at 1’28.4, placing him within 0.5 seconds of Jorge Martin’s record. Marco Bezzecchi also showed strong performance on hard tires with a time of 1’29.1. Maverick Vinales returned to the track, recording a 1’29.2 on a de-rated motorcycle and 1’29.9 on the 850cc model.

The tests indicate that the upcoming regulatory changes, which include reduced power and simplified aerodynamics, may lead to a more balanced championship by allowing mid-tier teams to compete more closely with the leaders. Further testing is scheduled for December in Valencia using near-final versions of the 850cc bikes.
