MotoGP Australian Grand Prix cancelled at Phillip Island due to weather

The 2026 MotoGP Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island was cancelled on Sunday, October 25, due to extreme weather conditions. While track conditions were described by Marc Marquez as “acceptable,” organizers determined that heavy rain and low visibility made it unsafe for the medical helicopter to operate.

Safety protocols require a medical helicopter to be able to reach Melbourne hospitals within a specific timeframe. Because ground evacuation from Phillip Island to the nearest major hospital takes over 45 minutes, the inability of the helicopter to fly due to poor visibility made the race impossible to sanction.

The cancellation has significant implications for the World Championship standings. Marc Marquez, who had taken the lead after Jorge Martin suffered a wrist injury during Saturday's Sprint race, missed an opportunity to extend his 10-point advantage. Conversely, the cancellation provides a reprieve for Martin, who was unable to compete in the main race.

The event also marked the final MotoGP race at the Phillip Island circuit before the Australian Grand Prix moves to Adelaide next year. Riders, including local hero Jack Miller, performed a ceremonial parade lap behind the safety car to bid farewell to the fans and the iconic track.
