MotoGP considers implementing a formal rider transfer window

MotoGP leadership is considering the implementation of a formal transfer window for riders, similar to models used in professional football. The proposal was discussed during a meeting of the newly formed IRTA (International Road Racing Teams Association) Board of Directors held at the Silverstone Grand Prix.

The initiative aims to prevent early-season transfer activity from overshadowing on-track competition. During the current season, approximately 80% of the grid positions for 2027 were reportedly filled before the mid-season break, leading to concerns that the sporting essence of the championship is being diluted by off-track negotiations.

Under the proposed system, any rider contracts signed outside of the designated period would be considered invalid. However, the plan faces internal disagreement. Yamaha has expressed support for the project, viewing it as a viable model, while Ducati has voiced hesitation, citing the complexity of managing existing contracts and promotions from lower racing categories.
