MotoGP develops in-helmet radio communication technology

MotoGP is developing an in-helmet radio communication system to enhance the connection between riders and their teams. Italian rider Luca Marini, who has been involved in testing the technology, stated that the system has reached a “good level” and presents an “interesting” prospect for the future of the sport.

The technology aims to allow teams to provide immediate information during races, particularly when traditional dashboard displays are less effective. A significant technical milestone includes a new earpiece design using bespoke moulds tailored to individual riders. While the system may initially be used to broadcast safety messages from Race Direction—potentially as early as 2027—Marini has been working on two-way communication capabilities.

Challenges remain regarding rider adaptation, as many athletes are accustomed to specific earplugs used throughout their careers. Additionally, developers must ensure that the added communication does not increase the cognitive load on riders managing high speeds and complex race conditions. The development involves collaboration with manufacturers such as Dainese and AGV.
