MotoGP proposes separate qualifying sessions for 2027

MotoGP officials are considering a significant change to the race weekend format starting in 2027. A proposal has been presented to teams and manufacturers to introduce separate qualifying sessions for the Saturday Sprint race and the Sunday Grand Prix.

This move would align the motorcycle championship more closely with the Formula 1 model. While Formula 1 will feature 10 Sprint races in 2027, MotoGP currently holds Sprints at every Grand Prix. Under the proposed system, one qualifying session would determine the grid for the Sprint, while a second would set the grid for the main race on Sunday.

Reports indicate that the initiative has been received positively by many stakeholders in the paddock. Additionally, there is internal discussion regarding potentially splitting qualifying into three segments (Q1, Q2, and Q3) to further mirror the Formula 1 structure. The proposal must still undergo official regulatory procedures before being finalized.
