MotoGP rider Joan Mir says engineers drive bike development
Riders in MotoGP, such as 2020 world champion Joan Mir, view their primary role as delivering precise feedback on a bike’s behaviour, leaving technical solutions to the engineers. Mir told Autosport, “We can explain what we feel on the bike, but we’re not engineers… Finding a way to make the bike faster isn’t in our hands.”
Team manager Nicolas Goyon of Red Bull KTM Tech3 agrees that while a rider’s input is essential for choosing parts and race packages, the creativity and upgrades come from the engineering staff. He added that riders can request changes like “more rear‑wheel rotation” or “better front‑end feel,” but they do not dictate specific components such as swingarm length.
The discussion also referenced Valentino Rossi’s 2004 move from Honda to Yamaha, noting that his riding skill helped exploit a bike that already had strong potential, underscoring that a rider alone cannot transform a non‑competitive machine into a champion.
Overall, the consensus is that MotoGP bike development is driven by engineers, with riders providing valuable on‑track data to guide the process.
