MotoGP riders protest new €5,000 fines for promotional event absences
MotoGP riders, including Marc Márquez and Pedro Acosta, are expressing strong opposition to new regulations introduced by Liberty Media. The organization plans to impose €5,000 fines on riders who fail to meet minimum time requirements for promotional activities, such as the ‘Hero Walk’ fan sessions.
Marc Márquez criticized the increasing demands on athletes, describing the pressure to participate in post-race ceremonies while exhausted as ‘inhumane’. He emphasized that while he supports the growth of the sport, there must be a balance between commercial obligations and the physical well-being of elite athletes.
Pedro Acosta supported Márquez’s stance, arguing that the management often overlooks the physical condition of riders. He noted that forcing injured athletes to participate in fan events could exacerbate medical issues and warned that such policies might discourage legendary riders from returning to the paddock in the future. Beyond financial penalties, the new rules may also include sporting sanctions, such as grid penalties or the loss of championship points for repeat offenders.
