MotoGP riders reject Michelin’s new hard-construction tyre for Motegi
MotoGP riders have expressed significant skepticism regarding a new hard-construction rear tyre introduced by Michelin for the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi. The tyre, designed to manage extreme heat build-up, is being offered as a third option specifically for the Motegi circuit, alongside the standard soft and medium compounds.
Pramac Yamaha rider Jack Miller was particularly critical, stating the tyre was ‘not an option’ for him and jokingly suggesting he would pack up and go home if forced to use it, while noting he was being serious about the performance implications. He cited a difficult weekend in Spielberg as a reason for his concern.
Luca Marini of Honda HRC also voiced apprehension, describing the hard-construction tyre as a ‘last resort.’ Marini emphasized that grip is essential for the RC213V's performance and that riders generally prefer softer compounds to maintain control and cornering speed unless high tyre degradation makes the harder option necessary.
