MotoGP considers F1-style budget cap to regulate spending
MotoGP management is actively pursuing the introduction of a budget cap, modeled after the financial regulations used in Formula 1. Sporting director Carlos Ezpeleta confirmed that the organization is determined to implement such a limit to bring more rationality to manufacturer spending.
Ezpeleta noted that while there is no direct link between spending and track success in MotoGP, a cap could benefit the championship by allowing manufacturers to reduce budgets and increase profitability. He acknowledged the complexity of the task, noting that MotoGP constructors come from diverse backgrounds and possess different organizational structures and factory connections.
In Formula 1, the budget cap introduced in 2021 has been credited with making the sport more attractive to new entrants and helping existing teams generate surpluses. Former F1 team principal and current Tech3 KTM boss Guenther Steiner is also reported to support the move toward a budget cap in MotoGP.
