Motor Oil refinery explosion in Corinth injures four workers

An explosion occurred at the Motor Oil refinery in Agioi Theodoroi, Corinth, during maintenance work on a high-pressure heat exchanger. The incident, which reportedly involved a sudden release of gas or steam during welding, resulted in injuries to four workers.

Two Greek workers, aged 40 and 59, sustained serious injuries including multiple fractures and burns; they are currently receiving specialized care in the intensive care unit at Thriasio Hospital. Two other workers, a 28-year-old Greek and a 48-year-old Slovenian, sustained minor injuries from the blast and a fall.

Authorities have arrested six individuals in connection with the incident, including a 62-year-old contractor, a 63-year-old contractor employee, and a 46-year-old Motor Oil employee. This event marks the second major incident at the facility within six days, following a fatal explosion that killed two workers on October 9.

In response, Motor Oil has suspended all preventive maintenance works at the refinery until October 19. The incident has prompted calls for strikes from energy unions and demands for thorough investigations by political parties and labor inspectors.
