Motorcycle safety concerns rise in Argentina and Colombia
New reports highlight rising motorcycle-related fatalities and safety concerns in Argentina and Colombia. In Argentina, the organization Luchemos por la Vida conducted a study to understand the psychosocial motivations behind risky riding behaviors. The study involved over 3,500 direct observations in Buenos Aires and surrounding areas, focusing on helmet use, pedestrian priority, and lane filtering. The goal is to propose a prevention program for motorcycle safety involving both authorities and app-based delivery companies.
In Colombia, motorcycle users account for 62% of road fatalities, a figure that nearly doubles the global average where motorcyclists typically represent about one-third of victims. While motorcycle sales continue to surge—with projections suggesting Colombia could reach the eighth largest market globally—the mortality rate for riders has doubled over the last decade. This growth presents a significant challenge for road safety officials attempting to protect millions of citizens who rely on motorcycles for both transportation and income.
