Motorcycle safety: Essential braking techniques and common riding errors

Motorcycle safety relies heavily on proper braking techniques and avoiding common riding errors. Effective braking requires a balanced use of both the front and rear brakes. Because deceleration causes weight to shift toward the front wheel, the front brake provides the majority of the stopping force. However, riders must apply pressure progressively to avoid locking the wheel and losing stability. The rear brake serves to complement the front and maintain motorcycle stability, though it is more prone to locking as weight shifts forward.

Beyond braking, several critical errors can lead to accidents even at low speeds. The DGT has highlighted the importance of wearing appropriate protective gear, such as helmets, gloves, jackets, pants, and boots, to mitigate injury during falls. In 2024, over 10% of motorcyclists killed in urban areas were not wearing helmets. Other significant risks include neglecting vehicle maintenance—specifically tires, brakes, and suspension—and failing to respect traffic laws, such as speed limits and traffic signals.
