Motorcycle stunts spark safety concerns in Honduras and Ecuador
Dangerous motorcycle stunts performed by groups of riders have sparked public concern and calls for increased enforcement in both Honduras and Ecuador.
In San Sebastián, Comayagua, video footage of youths performing stunts on public roads has drawn criticism regarding road safety and the potential strain on medical services. According to the Dirección Nacional de Vialidad y Transporte (DNVT), Honduras recorded 13,400 traffic accidents and 1,449 fatalities as of September 18, 2026, with motorcycle riders accounting for 42% of those deaths.
In Quito, Ecuador, motorcyclists occupied the San Juan tunnel to perform maneuvers such as wheelies, causing temporary traffic disruptions. The Agencia Metropolitana de Tránsito (AMT) stated that while these actions constitute traffic infractions, sanctions require verification in flagrante delicto. The AMT has pledged to reinforce controls in identified sectors following the social media backlash.
