Motorcycle thefts in the Netherlands show mixed trends
An analysis of public police data from January to September 2026 shows varying trends in motorcycle thefts across the Netherlands. While several major cities saw a decline, others experienced significant increases.
Amsterdam recorded the highest absolute number of thefts with 697 incidents, a 10% decrease from 775 in the same period in 2025. Haarlem saw a 20% drop, with 60 thefts compared to 74 the previous year. Utrecht also reported a decrease, falling from 179 to 155 incidents. Nationally, motorcycle thefts decreased by 6%.
Conversely, Breda saw the sharpest increase in thefts. Other municipalities reporting rises include Oss and Gooise Meren, both seeing 21 additional thefts, as well as Maassluis, Rotterdam, and Stichtse Vecht. Experts suggest that improved prevention measures, such as the use of built-in tracking systems and more secure storage, may contribute to the overall national decline.
