81‑year‑old cyclist killed in Tinogasta crash, driver charged

On July 2026, 81‑year‑old Rodolfo Ángel Leiva was riding a bicycle on Route Nacional 60 near La Puntilla in the Tinogasta district of Catamarca, Argentina, when he was struck from behind by a gray Great Wall Wingle van. The impact killed Leiva instantly. The van was being driven by Rodolfo Eduardo de la Mota, a resident of La Rioja. Police detained de la Mota at the scene, seized both the van and the bicycle, and formally charged him with aggravated culpable homicide (homicidio culposo agravado). The investigation, led by prosecutor Luis Jorge del Valle Barros, includes forensic analysis of the vehicles and reconstruction of the collision at kilometer 1.223 near the Club Deportivo Manuel Belgrano. Authorities continue to gather evidence to determine the exact circumstances of the crash.
