Motorcyclists in the Netherlands face insurance risks during winter storage

Motorcyclists in the Netherlands face unexpected insurance risks during the winter months when storing vehicles. While suspending a license plate through the RDW can save on road tax and mandatory third-party liability (WA) premiums, it does not automatically adjust insurance coverage.

Many riders mistakenly cancel their entire policy, leaving them unprotected against theft, fire, or storm damage to their own vehicle. While WA coverage only covers damage to others, specialized coverage like limited casco or all-risk is necessary to protect the motorcycle itself.

Statistics from the CBS indicate a significant theft risk, with an average of six motorcycles or scooters stolen daily in the Netherlands. Although national theft numbers have seen a slight decline, theft rates have increased in 138 out of 342 municipalities. Experts advise riders to review their policies and security requirements, such as specific ART-locks, to ensure coverage remains valid even when the vehicle is stored in a garage or shed.
