Motorhome popularity rises as vehicle numbers exceed one million

The popularity of motorhomes and campervans has seen a significant rise, with the number of vehicles in the central vehicle register exceeding one million in April 2025, more than doubling since 2017.

For those traveling with these vehicles, managing interior temperatures is a growing concern. Retrofitting roof-mounted air conditioning units, such as the Cool Top Trail series by Webasto, is a common solution to prevent heat buildup during summer trips. These systems are often compatible with standard 40 by 40 centimeter roof window openings and can typically be installed within a single day.

Drivers must also be aware of licensing regulations based on the vehicle's gross weight. A standard Class B license allows for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. When towing a caravan, the trailer must not exceed 750 kg unless the total combined weight remains under 3.5 tonnes. However, the B96 extension, which can be obtained through a one-day training course without a practical exam, allows for a total combined weight of up to 4.25 tonnes and is valid throughout the EU.
