Motorhome travel trends face legal and social challenges

The popularity of motorhome travel is rising, with approximately 650,000 registered vehicles in 2025. However, this trend has led to friction between travelers and local municipalities.

Some French towns have attempted to restrict motorhome parking using specific signage, such as a red-crossed motorhome pictogram. However, such signs may be illegal. Under the French Highway Code, a motorhome is classified as a light motor vehicle, similar to a passenger car. The Conseil d'État has indicated that municipalities cannot discriminate between vehicles of the same size or weight by banning one while allowing the other.

On an individual level, the nomadic lifestyle offers significant economic advantages for some. For instance, one retiree living in a motorhome for 19 years reports that the lifestyle allows for greater freedom and lower costs compared to maintaining a traditional home, often by utilizing free or wild parking spaces.
