Motorola faces scrutiny over Razr 70 Plus software update discrepancies

Motorola is facing scrutiny over discrepancies between the software support timelines listed in the European Union’s EPREL database and its own official support website for the Razr 70 Plus smartphone.

While the EU database indicates six years of update availability, Motorola’s website specifies four years of security patches and three years of Android version updates. This discrepancy stems from how the EU Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2023/1670 is interpreted. The regulation calculates the required support period from the “date of the end of placing on the market” of the last unit of a product model, rather than the date a consumer purchases the device.

Critics argue that Motorola is utilizing a legal loophole within the regulation. By interpreting the requirement to make updates “available” as merely keeping the final existing updates accessible on servers rather than actively developing new ones, the manufacturer may be meeting the letter of the law while potentially misleading consumers regarding the actual longevity and security of the device.
