Smartphone manufacturers develop new foldable and wide-screen designs
The smartphone industry is exploring new form factors to compete with current foldable technology. Xiaomi, through its Redmi sub-brand, is developing a line of smartphones featuring a rigid, ultra-wide screen. This design aims to provide a larger display for productivity and media consumption without the mechanical complexity, thickness, or fragility associated with foldable hinges. The project, expected to debut around 2027, is part of a broader strategic movement involving Chinese manufacturers like OPPO and Honor.
In the foldable market, Apple has entered the segment with the iPhone Duo, a book-style device featuring a 7.6-inch internal screen and a 5.4-inch external display. The device utilizes a titanium structure and supports Apple Pencil integration.
Motorola is also expanding its foldable portfolio. The Motorola Razr Fold offers a book-style design with a 6,000 mAh battery and stylus support, while the upcoming Razr Flex 27 has received certification in the UAE. The Razr Flex 27 is expected to feature a wide-folding form factor, potentially utilizing a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chipset and a large OLED inner display.
