Max Verstappen defends teammate after online abuse in Portugal

Max Verstappen has publicly condemned the online harassment directed at his teammate, Chris Lulham, following the GT World Challenge Europe finale at the Portimão Circuit in Portugal. During the three-hour endurance race, Lulham was involved in contact with another Mercedes-AMG, resulting in a drive-through penalty that significantly impacted the Mercedes-AMG Team Verstappen Racing's position.

Despite the setback, Verstappen performed a notable recovery drive, climbing from 24th place to finish 9th. Addressing the subsequent wave of social media abuse against Lulham, Verstappen stated, “Everyone can have their opinions about what happened on track, but these personal attacks are not okay. Chris had a really strong stint and mistakes can happen. There’s no place for this kind of abuse in our sport or anywhere else.”

Verstappen also expressed interest in competing in the 2027 Spa 24 Hours, noting his affinity for the Belgian circuit. The race weekend also drew significant attention, with reports indicating high viewership and large crowds at the circuit.
