Mototaxi accidents result in fatalities and injuries in Peru and Mexico
Two separate traffic accidents involving mototaxis have resulted in casualties in Mexico and Peru.
In Mexico, a truck collided with a mototaxi on the Mérida-Campeche federal highway near kilometer 87. The impact caused the three-wheeled vehicle to split in two. Two occupants sustained serious injuries and multiple fractures; they were treated by the Mexican Red Cross and transported to the Hospital Integral IMSS-Bienestar. The truck driver stated he attempted to avoid the mototaxi while being overtaken by a trailer. National Guard elements are investigating the incident.
In Peru, a collision between a public service van and a mototaxi in Juliaca, Puno, resulted in two deaths. A passenger in the mototaxi died instantly, and the driver passed away while being transported to the Carlos Monge Medrano hospital. Local residents expressed indignation over the delayed arrival of the National Police and have demanded the installation of speed reducers in the area to prevent further accidents.
