Motru to commemorate 45th anniversary of 1981 miner revolt

The municipality of Motru will host a commemorative symposium on Friday, October 16, 2026, to mark the 45th anniversary of the ‘Bread Strike,’ a miner revolt that occurred in Gorj in October 1981.

Organized by the Motru Local Council, the Motru City Hall, and the Motru House of Culture, the event will take place at the Motru Multicultural House Conference Hall starting at 13:00. The symposium aims to highlight a significant moment in the recent history of the municipality and the Romanian labor movement.

The program includes an open debate featuring historians, local press representatives, former miners, and witnesses to the protests. Under the theme ‘Memory • Respect • For those who wrote history!’, the local administration intends to honor the miners who protested to defend their rights and to educate younger generations about this historical episode in Gorj.
