Moulin Rouge! musical closes on Broadway after seven-year run

The musical ‘Moulin Rouge!’ is closing on Broadway after a seven-year run. During its tenure, the production earned 10 Tony Awards and generated more than $381 million in revenue.

Based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film, the musical follows characters Christian and Satine, incorporating pop hits such as Beyoncé’s ‘Single Ladies’ alongside ‘Lady Marmalade’. The production became a symbol of theatrical resilience following the 2020 pandemic-induced shutdown of the theater industry.

In 2021, the show secured major success at the Tony Awards, winning in ten categories including Best Musical, direction, and acting. Producer Carmen Pavlovic honored the broader Broadway community during her acceptance, noting the collective efforts of shows that opened, closed, or managed to reopen after the pandemic.
