Moundou authorities move to curb unregulated urban expansion

Authorities in Moundou, the capital of Chad's Logone Occidental province, are implementing measures to manage rapid and unregulated urban expansion. Driven by demographic and economic growth, the city's outskirts are developing faster than the necessary infrastructure and services can be provided.

Abdelsalam Hisseine Adiko, the provincial delegate for Land Management, Habitat, and Urbanism, stated that the proliferation of unauthorized or non-compliant buildings is a primary challenge. To address this, the delegation is employing strategies including public awareness campaigns, technical inspections, strict authorization processes, and the demolition of illegal structures when necessary.

In addition to unregulated construction, the city faces increasing land disputes resulting from subdivision operations. Local commissions have been mobilized to resolve these conflicts, while regular inspections aim to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards. The rapid growth continues to place significant pressure on essential services, including roads, sanitation networks, and green spaces.
