Mounjaro sales exceed 1 million euros in a single day in Portugal

The weight-loss and diabetes medication Mounjaro (tirzepatide) has achieved unprecedented sales in Portugal, surpassing 1 million euros in a single day. According to data from HMR – Health Market Research and reports from Diário de Notícias, more than 3,000 boxes were sold in a 24-hour period.

Industry sources indicate this was not an isolated event, noting that the 1-million-euro milestone was reached on two other days in August. The medication, which is administered via weekly subcutaneous injection, is used to treat type 2 diabetes and manage weight by regulating glucose and appetite.

Despite the high volume of sales, the drug is not subsidized by the Portuguese state. Prices per package range from approximately 180 to 400 euros, depending on the dosage. Medical experts, including gastroenterologist Helena Cortez-Pinto from the University of Lisbon, suggest the surge is driven by the drug's efficacy in weight loss and its potentially fewer side effects compared to other substances like semaglutide.
