Mount Athos: Man arrested for negligent fire near Hilandarou Monastery
A 53-year-old man has been arrested for causing a fire by negligence near the Hilandarou Monastery on Mount Athos. The incident occurred on September 5, 2026, at approximately 14:15, near the Holy Seat of Saint Symeon.
According to investigative findings, the individual was burning waste in a metal barrel when the fire escaped, spreading to nearby reeds, dry grass, and low vegetation. The fire burned an area of approximately 40 square meters and was extinguished by the Hilandarou Monastery fire safety team. The suspect was issued an administrative fine of 2,625 euros.
Data from the Fire Service indicates that between January 1 and September 6, 2026, a total of 767 administrative fines totaling over 1.28 million euros have been issued, alongside 339 arrests related to fire offenses.
