Mount Athos monasteries to receive restoration funding

The Central Macedonia Region is funding two restoration projects for Holy Monasteries on Mount Athos through the ESPA program. Following decisions signed by Regional Governor Athina Aidona, the total budget for these works exceeds 1.2 million euros.

The first project involves the repair and restoration of the western wing (Section C) of the Iviron Monastery. This phase aims to complete the functional and structural restoration of the wing, addressing issues caused by moisture, aging materials, and previous fragmented interventions, such as damaged plaster and wooden elements.

The second project focuses on the restoration and reconstruction of the Saint Sava Cell at Simonopetra Monastery, which was destroyed by fire in 1991. The work will strengthen existing structural elements and reconstruct damaged architectural parts while adhering to traditional monastic design rules and preserving the monument's authenticity.
