Mount Etna: American tourist killed by lightning strike

A 29-year-old American tourist from Kansas died after being struck by lightning while hiking on Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy. The incident occurred in an open, vegetation-free area at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters near Rocca Capra. Although rescuers reached the man via helicopter, medical personnel later confirmed his death.

The tragedy unfolded amidst a period of intense volcanic activity on Europe’s most active volcano. Mount Etna has been highly active for nearly two weeks, characterized by lava fountains, ash clouds, and lava flows. This activity has led authorities to close certain slopes to tourists and has caused disruptions to air traffic, including partial closures of airspace near Catania airport due to the risk posed by volcanic ash.

Experts note that lightning strikes on Mount Etna have historically caused more fatalities than the volcanic activity itself. The heat from lava flows can influence local weather, potentially contributing to the formation of localized thunderstorms and dust devils.
