Mount Etna eruption causes lava flows and temporary flight suspensions in Sicily
Mount Etna has entered a phase of intense eruptive activity, characterized by explosive eruptions at the Voragine and South-East craters, as well as the opening of new vents. A new eruptive vent opened in the Valle del Bove near Mount Rittmann at an altitude of approximately 2,550 meters on August 7, accompanied by pyroclastic flows.
Lava flows have been observed in the Valle del Leone and Valle del Bove, with some fronts reaching altitudes near 2,000 meters. Ash emissions have caused disruptions to air travel, leading to the temporary suspension of incoming flights at Catania Airport. However, following a downgrade in the volcanic alert level from red to orange, flight operations at Catania Airport have since resumed.
To assist travelers during the disruptions, Trenitalia implemented special train services. While volcanic activity continues, monitoring by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) shows high levels of volcanic tremor, though recent data indicates a slight decrease in amplitude.
