Mount Etna eruption disrupts Catania Airport with 4km ash cloud
Mount Etna has entered a new eruptive phase, producing a volcanic ash cloud that has reached an altitude of approximately four kilometers. This activity has triggered a red alert for aviation, prompting authorities to close airspace sector C1 near Catania.
As a result, flight operations at Catania-Fontanarossa Airport have faced significant disruptions, including the suspension of arrivals and departures. Reports indicate that over 50 flights have been cancelled or diverted to alternative Sicilian airports, including Palermo, Comiso, and Trapani. Some international and domestic connections, such as those from London, Paris, and Rome, have been specifically impacted.
The Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) is monitoring the volcano, noting continuous ash emissions from the North-East Crater and variable degassing. Experts warn that the current activity could intensify, potentially leading to larger eruption columns or summit cone collapses. Passengers are advised to check flight statuses with their airlines before traveling to the airport.
