Mount Etna eruptions cause major flight disruptions and economic losses in Sicily

Ongoing volcanic activity from Mount Etna has caused significant disruption to Sicilian transportation and tourism. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reported a resumption of Strombolian activity at the Voragine crater, producing ash emissions that disperse toward the southern quadrant. A new eruptive vent also opened at approximately 3,100 meters in the Valle del Bove.

The aviation sector faced major challenges, with Catania-Fontanarossa Airport experiencing its most severe crisis in 20 years. Between August 6 and 15, approximately 684 flights were canceled, affecting roughly 104,000 travelers. To mitigate the impact, Palermo Falcone Borsellino Airport managed 710 additional flights diverted from Catania, transporting over 112,000 passengers during the emergency period from August 7 to 17.

Local business associations, including Assoesercenti, estimate that the tourism sector has incurred losses of approximately 22 million euros. The disruption impacted various industries, including hotels, restaurants, transport companies, and retail. While Catania airport has since restored flight activities following an alert level downgrade from RED to ORANGE, experts continue to monitor the volcano's seismic and infrasonic activity.
