Mount Etna eruption triggers red aviation alert and Catania Airport closures

Mount Etna has experienced intense volcanic activity, resulting in a significant ash plume reaching an estimated height of 4 kilometers. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) has issued a red VONA (Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation) alert, the highest level on the four-stage scale.

The eruption, occurring at the volcano's northeast crater, has caused major disruptions to air travel in Sicily. Catania Fontanarossa Airport has faced multiple operational restrictions, including the suspension of all arrivals and departures. While some initial restrictions were set to expire on Saturday afternoon, subsequent updates from the airport management company, Sac, extended the suspension of flight activities until midday on Sunday, September 27, due to the prevailing wind direction dispersing ash toward the airport.

Numerous flights have been diverted to other Sicilian airports, including Palermo, Trapani, and Comiso, to manage the traffic imbalance. Experts note that the reddish-brown color of the plume is likely due to the mobilization of old volcanic material and chemically altered particles rather than new magma. The situation remains under constant monitoring by aviation authorities and volcanologists.
