Mount Etna eruptions disrupt flights in Sicily and Malta
Mount Etna's ongoing volcanic activity has caused significant disruptions across Sicily and the central Mediterranean. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) reports that eruptions are occurring from openings at altitudes of 2,360 and 2,750 meters, with a new fissure recently opening in the Valle del Bove at approximately 1,900 meters. Lava flows have reached altitudes of roughly 1,370 meters.
The ash clouds have severely impacted aviation. Catania Airport has faced repeated suspensions of arrivals and departures, with flight operations halted at various intervals. The disruption has extended to Comiso airport and has reached Malta, where Malta International Airport reported 19 flight cancellations due to drifting ash.
An estimated 30,000 people are affected by the travel chaos and volcanic activity. In Sicily, many tourists are stranded, with some sleeping at airports or facing high costs for private transfers to Palermo. Local authorities and airport management have advised travelers to check flight statuses before departing for terminals.
