Mount Etna eruption disrupts Catania airport and triggers red alert
Mount Etna is experiencing intense and continuous volcanic activity, characterized by explosive eruptions at the Voragine crater and effusive flows from vents at altitudes of 2,360 and 2,750 meters. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) has maintained the highest red alert level due to significant ash emissions and volcanic tremors. Lava flows have advanced through the Valle del Bove, with the leading edge reaching approximately 1,370 to 1,500 meters above sea level.
The eruption has caused major disruptions to air travel in Sicily. Catania-Fontanarossa Airport has faced multiple suspensions of both arriving and departing flights due to volcanic ash clouds and ash deposits on runways. Many flights have been diverted to Palermo's Falcone Borsellino Airport. Authorities have extended flight suspensions through the morning of August 11.
Local officials have raised concerns regarding emergency management. MP Filippo Scerra criticized the lack of a robust contingency plan, suggesting that the Comiso airport should be better integrated as a permanent strategic alternative to Catania to protect the region's tourism economy.
