Mount Etna viticulture project preserves ancient vineyards

The project ‘I Custodi delle Vigne dell’Etna’ focuses on preserving the viticultural heritage of Mount Etna by recovering ancient vineyards and traditional agricultural practices. Established following Mario Paoluzi’s initial land acquisitions in 2007, the initiative aims to prevent the loss of local history caused by land abandonment.

Through connections with Mick Hucknall, formerly of Simply Red, Paoluzi collaborated with Salvo Foti to implement a strategy centered on local traditions, such as the ‘alberello’ (bush vine) method and the ‘quinconce’ planting system. The company manages approximately 12 hectares across various areas, including Moganazzi, Taverna, and Feudo di Mezzo.

Notable features of the vineyards include pre-phylloxera, ungrafted vines in Feudo di Mezzo that are over two centuries old, protected by traditional lava stone walls. The project’s ‘Ante’—a pure Carricante wine—is highlighted as a product of this historical preservation effort.
